John Batchelor and I welcomed back Bill Harwood of CBS Space News to discuss the newly proposed NASA Artemis plan to return to the Moon using the Lunar Gateway, SLS, and the Orion crew capsule.  Our guest described the Artemis project in full, the various components including SLS, Orion, commercial bids for the lunar lander, different rocket, landing and return stages, plus propulsion by ESA.  Also discussed in this two segment Hotel Mars program was the Gateway orbit and why it will have this orbit.  Bill explained the purpose and use of the Gateway.  He also talked about landing at the poles for the water ice and lunar resources.  Bill discussed the funding issues, congress, the budget going to CR and the need for the additional $1.6 billion for FY 2020. Furthermore, he said the additional extra amounts needed for future years was not yet known but that it would be a costly project.  International cooperation was brought up including the orbit for the Gateway and ESA propulsion unit not having sufficient energy for any other orbit.  Bill did say that from where the Gateway will be, astronauts should be able to go to any point on the lunar surface. He said the Gateway would be manned when a mission was using it to go to the Moon.  Listen to how he explained its function.  Before we timed out on Hotel Mars, John brought up the new spacesuit design that will be used. Bill said it was being designed in-house at NASA JSC and was shown publicly about two weeks ago.  Don't miss the spacesuit discussion at the end of our Hotel Mars program.
