We welcomed John Bucknell, CEO of Virtus Solis Technologies, back to the show.  In addition,  we thanked John for coming on at the last minute due to the cancellation of our regularly scheduled guest who we hope to reschedule at a future time.  John led off talking about the upcoming ISDC solar program and publicity for SSP along with his company, Virtus Solar.  John then talked about the demonstrations and testing being done by his company, as he said many times, one step at a time.  He mentioned his next energy beaming or transmission test would go for 100 meters.  This led to a discussion about moving energy including the first email question from Todd on moving power around.  John talked some technology with an abductive charge, the choice of either laser or microwave and rectenna development.  John mentioned that sunlight was about 40% more intense in space than on Earth.  He also talked about the 1960's Soviet Union orbit being used known as the Molniya Orbit which he described for us.

Next, John said it was important to answer the question of why SSP in the first place.  He cited an example from Germany and told us the story to support the example.  Don't miss it.  He talked about with solar getting 5 to 100 times more energy than with terrestrial solar.  He was asked if terrestrial solar farms could be revamped or retrofitted. He said no but listen to his explanation. When was asked about the power loss in moving energy around, he suggested it was upwards of 60%.

Our friend Marshall called to talk about rectennas while wanting to know if existing solar farms could be retrofitted with more modern technology.  This led to a short discussion about the Las Vegas solar project known as Ivanpah.  John suggested the project was not all that successful.  Other topics included IEEE spectrum concerns, then Carl from Denver asked John by email if he was glad he left the business of working toward nuclear power and propulsion.  John gave quite a lengthy answer to this question, discussed nuclear energy in some details and when the discussion ended, you might be surprised by his concluding comments regarding nuclear and the choice he made to leave the industry.  Before ending, Paul from Atlanta asked John about the regulatory state of affairs.  Don't miss this commentary and his concluding comments.
