John Batchelor and I welcomed back Bill Harwood of CBS Space News to discuss the Falcon 9 Block 4 launch of both a government and commercial payload earlier in the day. We talked about the two climate satellites as part of the payload, the GRACE Follow On satellites (known as GRACE FO). The two satellites were the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On birds replacing older versions while the commercial satellites were five replacement satellites for the Iridium NEXT global communication satellite constellation. Pay particular attention to the technical and working details provided by Bill for both the GRACE FO satellites as well as the Iridium replacement satellites. We also talked about why these payloads were launched on a Block 4 Falcon 9 which was used several months ago on the ZUMA launch. Bill then talked differences in Block and the Block 5 which recently flew for the first time. As for competing with SpaceX, note what Bill said near the end of the segment regarding ULA and Blue Origin. Bill did say that SpaceX and Musk were definitely driving the conversation about rocketry along with the technology.
