We welcomed both Rob Ronci and Trent Tresch to this program for a one segment almost 90 minute Caelus Foundation (CF) discussion on Foundation programs, goals, outreach, working with China and their recently published paper in the New Space Journal.  Visit their website at www.caelusfoundation.org.  Follow along as our discussion hit on many of the items, program descriptions and topics displayed and explained on their website.  You can download and read their recently published New Space Journal article, "Communicating Value: Investigating terminology Challenges in Newspace and Commercial Space.  The paper is linked on our blog or go to https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/space.2020.0023.  Follow along with the paper as we did spend significant time talking about parts of it beginning fairly early in our discussion.

Discussion topics included a brief introduction to CF for new and old listeners as there have been lots of changes and developments in the space community since the last time we focused on CF on The Space show.  Significant program time was spent on the Foundation's China policy and out research.  In fact, this discussion sparked our first listener phone call from David in Glendale, AZ who challenged our guests on their China policy given what we hear and know about the risks of doing business with China.  More about this in a few minutes.  Their paper published in the New Space Journal was talked about in detail, especially with regard to definitions and terminology guided by the Foundation's global research on this issue.  Don't miss these discussions as they were informative and important.  Toward the end of our program, our guests looked forward to the new year, letting us know their focus and the broad base for their 2021 plans.

Follow the keywords and tags to see all of what we talked about on the show.  Here they are:  Caelus Foundation, Rob Ronci, Trent Tresch, The New Space Journal, Communicating Value: Investigating Terminology Challenges in Newspace and Commercial Space, space diplomacy, the human element in space, value for space industry, outreach with China on commercial space, U.S. -China divide, expanding space for more availability, space skill sets, barriers to entry liberal arts and engineering, SpaceX, China software concerns, New Space challenges and conflicts with China, national security concerns with China, defining space benefits and values, U.S adversarial role with China,  CCP-PLA  concerns, Chinese commercial launch industry, diversity with large aerospace companies, diversity challenges with entrepreneurial and startup organizations, Caelus Foundation outreach beyond China, participation with Caelus Foundation, the 2021 Foundation focus, community constellations, volunteers, media outreach.

Challenges to what our guest were saying about China were soon upon us as our first caller David, was not supportive of what they were talking about regarding China.  David was approaching the subject form a national security perspective and asking our guest hard questions about China, the PRC, PLA and CCP connections and more.  At one point he suggested that the Foundation was engaging in "lollipop thinking." It was a spirited short discussion.  I added some concerns to the discussion but in a less challenging way than our caller.  Listen carefully to what was said and exchanged, then post your comments and feedback on these issues on our blog for this show, especially regarding the responses from our guests.  All of us want to hear from you.  Note that before David's call, we fielded a few email questions focused on asking questions about who or what industries were being blocked from participating in the broader space industry and why.  These questions were based on our guests talking about working to open up and expand space, making opportunities more readily available to those that may be locked out of participating in space for a variety of reasons at this time.

After the mini discussion with David,  Fremont John called to talk about the US-Sino space challenges, wanting to know what was real and not real given what we hear from guests and others such as Gen. Kwast.  This too was a most interesting discussion so don't miss it. John thought it best to talk with China, not ignore them.  John then talked about their New Space Journal Paper which he had read before today's program. He found it to be very good and strongly suggested it be read by the listeners to The Space Show.  He discussed several the points brought up in the paper.  For more, listen to the discussion and read the paper.  As always, post your comments and thoughts on our blog.

We talked with our guest about Chinese companies and their connection to the CCP and the PLA.  Our guests had much to say about this, suggesting it was not as widespread as we may be led to believe by media and others.  Once again, listen to all of what was said on this subject and let us know what you think.  Near the end of this important mini discussion, our guests referenced a paper by the Institute for Defense Analysis (IDA), "Evaluation of China's Commercial Space Sector."  The organization published this paper in Sept. 2019.  You can find it at https://www.ida.org/research-and-publications/publications/all/e/ev/evaluation-of-chinas-commercial-space-sector.  In addition, one of the authors was Bhavya Lal who was recently scheduled to be a guest on TSS but at the last minute could not make it so her co-author was the guest for that show earlier this year.  As I said on the air, the IDA work is excellent so for those of you interested in a quality assessment of China and their developing commercial space industry, I suggest you read this paper.

Our next caller was Ft. Worth John.  He wanted to comment on parts of the diversity discussion that had taken place earlier in the program.   He said bigger companies might be better able to work with diversification but the smaller, more entrepreneurial companies most likely did not have the resources for diversity planning and programming.  During this discussion, our guests were asked if the CF did outreach to the rest of the world, in particular to other space states or just to China.  Don't miss what our guests had to say in response to this set of questions.

As we were nearing the end of the program, both guests were asked if interested people could participate in some of the work and projects of the Foundation.  The answer was yes so if this interests you, pay attention what Rob and then Trent said about participation.  In addition, Rob provided his email address for those wanting to contact him regarding ides for new projects, volunteering or other forms of participation.  You will hear him give out his email address near the end of the program.  Both guests mentioned a joint webinar program coming up soon with the Secure World Foundation on December 8.  You can find out more about this program here:  https://swfound.org.  You can also email Rob using the address he provided on air per above for questions about this event.

In summarizing the program, our guests talked about their community constellations program designed for both those in the space industry and those wanting to be in or make use of the space industry for their business.  Our guests spent a few minutes explaining this program and inviting interested parties to contact them as this will be rolled out in 2021.

Please post your comments/questions for our guests on our blog page.  You can reach our guests through the website and for Rob, you can reach him using his email address which he provided near the end of the program.
