We welcomed Chris Carberry, Executive Director of Explore Mars, back to the show to discuss the upcoming Innovation Forum event May 25-27.  You can get more information about the event and follow along with us as Chris and I hit the highlights by visiting www.exploremars.org, then scroll down on the home page until you arrive at the Innovation Forum main section.  Follow along with us as we talk about panels, speakers and the logistics of the event.

Chris said that this was going to be the first in a series of forums to be virtually held by Explore Mars to examine what is needed for humans on Mars to be sustainable.  He also mentioned their upcoming Humans2Mars event which will be partially virtual, partially in person in the fall.  After discussing and going over the Innovation Forum speakers and panels which are on the website, Chris answered several questions which were not part of the event discussion.

One such question that Chris took on dealt with his idea of when humans would make it to the Martian surface.  The listener was looking for a timeline.  Chris said the lunar surface by mid 2020s and then Mars by mid 2030s.  Listener Randy then asked him about the challenges due to planetary protection. This was a longer discussion but listen to his reply, especially his comments about ethical development and exploration.  Part of this discussion was a result of Chris being reminded of all the naysayer articles and posts that have been appearing over the last several months.

Marshall called to talk about mission size  He was asking about an initial mission with a possible crew size of 4-6 people. Chris and Marshall talked about the ongoing length of stay debate, compared possible Mars early missions to Antarctica, then Chris talked about the helicopter flying vehicle on Mars and the MOXIE experiment which was successful in making O2 on Mars for the very first time!

For the remainder of our program, Chris talked about the new organization he was forming, the Space Drinks Association.  The website is still being developed but it is up and running at http://spacedrinks.space.  Chris talked about alcohol research needing to be done in space, in microgravity, with C02 carbonation and more. Questions came in regarding plans for space tourists to have luxury accommodations with luxury food and drink, maybe wine, champagne, or beer.  Chris talked about the need to have low carbonated drinks and why.  The Space Drinks Association is still being developed so we will hear much more about it later in the year.  If you are interested in it, contact Chris through me or Explore Mars.

Please post your comments/questions for Chris about the Innovation Forum, Space Drinks Association or Explore Mars on our blog for this show.  You can reach Chris though me or his website.
