We welcomed back to the program Dr. John Brandenburg (Dr. B on The Space Show) to update us regarding his nuclear destruction theory for Mars going back about 500 million years. John's reviewed and published paper is now available and on our blog for this program. For the early part of this program, Dr. B went over the basics of his theory, so if this is new to you, listen closely.  Once again, Dr. B talked about finding Xe 129 in the Martian atmosphere. The only known sources of Xe 129 are from a Super Nova Type 2 or a hydrogen bomb.  Since we know there has been no super nova in and around Mars, the evidence trail leads to giant nuclear hydrogen bomb like actions against early Mars leaving behind the Xe 129, traces of R process which result from an H-Bomb along with other clues Dr. B wrote about in his paper and on this and other Space Show programs plus lots of other interviews he has given over the years. 

During this program Dr. B added in his opinion, based on the evidence in his paper and what he said in this interview, that NASA was not interested in finding or confirming life on Mars, past or present.  He speculated why in his opinion this was so. He brought this up because it relates back to why and who might have nuked Mars because if there was no life on Mars in the past, than the theory has a serious problem.  Also, he talked about competing positions between NASA JSC and JPL on the life issue.  What do you think since NASA searching for life on Mars and life searching robotic experiments have been the subject of many Space Show programs.  Post your thoughts on our blog for this show. 

Much of what was talked about included some heavy-duty physics, but John was good at explaining things to us. Once again as in other appearances on TSS, much of the hydrogen bomb facts are still classified and people with older security clearances are still held to them. This affects John so he is careful in talking about what can be cited and found on Wikipedia regarding H-bomb research.  Should you seek to confirm or reject any of John's theories, I suggest the people you talk with have at least some knowledge of nuclear weapons, H bombs, atmospheric testing after our H bomb testing in the atmosphere 60-70 years ago and the isotopes the bomb tests created.  They should know something about R process, how Xe 129 comes about, F process and other open literature H bomb facts otherwise you might not get an accurate "second or third opinion."

We talked quite a bit about John's personal cost for putting forth this theory as it has branded him a kook, a fringe scientist and worse.  He is actually a superbly trained plasma physicist from UC Davis, the Livermore Lab and Los Alamos. He has also worked in the labs as well, so he does know the subject matter despite his theory being nearly impossible and very challenging to wrap arms around and accept.  Afterall, who in their right mind wants to think that Mars was destroyed by two huge nuclear H-bomb like weapons around 500 million years ago. Not me but I have to see a credible alternative explanation for Xe 129 and some of the other facts Dr. B has brought to our attention. Later in the discussion, John did say that Mars was targeted given the signature the bombs left on Mars that can be detected today.  No speculation is possible as to who did the targeting or why.

Listener Todd sent in a question asking if the theory could be proven in a way other than with boots on the ground on Mars in the sites in the northern hemisphere where John said boots should go.  Dr. B suggested searching for Plutonium 244. Listen to his explanation for going after Plutonium 244.  Near the end, Dr. Lurio sent in a note disagreeing with John and using a slang word to ID what he was saying. I read the email on air and John wanted him to call in.  It took me awhile to get Charles to call but he did, and I give him great credit for going eye to eye, so to speak with Dr. B.  As it turned out, Charles missed the first half of the show, did not know what we were talking about and said he was not familiar with Dr. B's nukes on Mars theory. Dr. B explained it to him and toward the end of their discussion, it appeared that Charles had retreated from the slang name but had not jumped on board the theory. They concluded their discussion with completely different subjects.  Don't miss the Lurio "segment" later in this discussion.
