John Batchelor and I welcomed Allen Chen, the team lead for EDL for the Mars 2020 rover mission. Mars 2020 will land at Jezero Crater which is a 28 mile wide crater posing the most challenging NASA landing ever for putting a payload on Mars. As the team lead for EDL for Mars 2020, Mr. Chen talked about an array of new navigation and landing tools that have been tested and retested here on Earth and that will make the landing possible. If you want to read more about the amazing EDL tools you will hear discussed on this single Hotel Mars segment, check out the following articles: (1) https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=7442; (2) https://www.space.com/nasa-mars-rover-navigation-laser-hand.html. Mr. Chen also discussed changes in the wheels for the rover, a new parachute for a more accurate landing plus the tools used for searching for past life. He also talked about why Jezero Crater was selected for landing site.
You can email Mr. Batchelor or Allen Chen through me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Allen Chen can also be reached through the JPL website for Mars 2020 plus his other engineering projects over the years at JPL.
