John Batchelor and I welcomed back Dr. Harold Connolly to discuss the SCI impact on the surface of Ryugu as part of the Japanese Hayabusa2 mission. The SCI impact on April 4 was highly successfully. Dr. Connolly explained the experiment to us, the instrument used and how the impact was made from the spacecraft. Dr. Connolly also talked about Ryugu which is a C-type carbonaceous asteroid, what the Hayabusa2 mission has learned so far and what we are still learning from this mission. Our guest explained the DCAM3 camera which recorded the SCI bombing of the surface of the asteroid to create fresh particles to be studied. After discussing the Hayabusa2 mission, Dr. Connolly, also a member of the OSIRIS REx science team, provided us with an update to this mission.
