John Batchelor and I welcomed back Dr. David Grinspoon to discuss New Horizons and updates for Ultima Thule in the Kuiper Belt. Dr. Grinspoon talked about the low velocity impact that brought the two objects Ultima and Thule together, plus he was asked how we knew the two objects were actually stuck together. Other topics included small objects in the Kuiper Belt, future targets for New Horizons and limitations on finding future targets, plus the concept that Ultima Thule was a frozen in time model for how the early universe was created. Our guest described what was meant by saying Ultima Thule was a contact binary, he discussed the absence of surface fractures and what that meant and much more.
