I'm a science journalist interested in the stories behind, around, underneath, and within scientific research (I may have left out a few relevant prepositions). I'm a contributor at Wired and Popular Science, and my work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Slate, Discover, Vice, and others. I am the author of Making Contact, They Are Already Here, Astronomical Mindfulness, and the forthcoming Mass Defect, about nuclear weapons research. A writing portfolio lives here.
Previously, I was an associate editor of Astronomy magazine and the public education specialist at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia. I have a degree in Astrophysics from Agnes Scott College and an MFA in Fiction from Cornell University.
When I'm not making sentences, I enjoy reading short story collections, running weirdly long distances in the wilderness, teaching my dog English, and trying to become a better navigator.
