Melvin Croft holds a Master of Science degree in geology from Florida State University and worked for over 27 years as a petroleum geologist. He retired to Maine in 2007 and began teaching introductory geology classes part-time at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Croft grew up in Florida and by the age of 6 was captivated by astronauts and spaceflight. Weather permitting he was able to witness many of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo launches from his yard. Over the past 15 years he’s had the privilege of meeting and interacting with many astronauts which has fueled his desire to learn more about humankind’s ventures into outer space. He is a contributor to Footprints in the Dust: The Epic Voyages of Apollo, 1969–1975(Nebraska, 2010), writing the story of Apollo 17 which carried geologist Harrison Schmitt to the moon.
