John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Scott Gaudi of Ohio State to discuss KELT-9b, the hottest hot Jupiter exoplanet found to date.  For this single segment Hotel Mars program, Dr. Gaudi discussed KELT-9b's characteristics, how it was discovered using two tiny KELT telescopes, the very hot temperature on its tidally locked side facing its star but on "guessing" as to the temperature on the backside which should be cooler.  Also discussed was the intense ultra violet radiation due to the planet's closeness to its star, plus a short life expectancy of about 300 million years compared to the several billions years remaining for our sun.  KELT-9b has lots of unknowns about it which our guest pointed out.  The inclined polar orbit was a discussion item near the end of the program.

You can email Mr. Batchelor or Dr. Scott Gaudi through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.  Dr. Gaudi can also be reached through his Ohio State Astronomy Department webpage.
