Welcome to our two segment two hour ten minute Open Lines discussion.  We started the program with a surprise guest, Dan Adamo.  I asked Dan to join us to help us understand the orbital dynamics of going to Mars or the Martian moons from Earth.  I wanted Dan on board due to the conversation that came up on the Friday program with John Connolly and the series of questions BJohn asked about why we don't go to the Martian moons before going to the surface of Mars.  Mr Connolly made the comment that going to the Martian moons might be harder and more complex than many think. This comment started BJohn on a tangent to dismiss what was being said in favor of his opinion, then he posted a comment about it on the blog when the show ended and others posted their comments including James Fincannon and Kim of Moonwards.  Orbital dynamics is a complex issue, lots of math and equations and if one is not really up on it or has not worked such problems and trades, it is even more challenging to understand.  So I asked Dan to talk with us to help us understand the issues regarding launching from Earth for the surface of Mars or the Martian moons.

Dan was with us for about 40 minutes.  He took us through the issues, mission trades, the ecliptic discussion, plane changes, burns to accomplish the mission goals, the importance of the departure date and time along with the arrival date and time, speeds, Delta V requirements for various decisions, and penalties (more fuel needed which means less payload).  At times this was a very technical discussion but Dan did a great job in making it simple enough so we could all understand it.  I suggest you listen to what he had to say carefully as it is worth it.  Dan also gave me permission to post the two emails he sent regarding this matter which I did and I also uploaded his unpublished 2016 paper which he referenced during his call.  You should find the paper on the blog site for this show. If you have trouble finding it after looking for it, email me and I will do my best to help you find it.  In addition, both during Dan's call and in his first email, he reference the Aquarius plan for going to Mars and the Martian moons so I put the link to The Space Show program on this subject in my blog post.  I suggest you listen to this program. Even if you heard it live or a few years ago, it is applicable to our current discussion and it would be worth hearing it again.

After talking Mars orbital dynamics,  I asked Dan for his thoughts on other hot topics.  For example, Dan liked the Bezos stepping stones approach to space development which has been frequently discussed in the media and on TSS.  He talked about the need to go out to Mars in the future via a path of visiting near earth asteroids.  Don't miss his comments and let us know what you think by posting on the blog.  I asked him to compare and contrast this with the SpaceX Mars plans.  Another item I asked Dan about was LOP-G.  Don't miss what he said about LOP-G, its usefulness and more.  Dan mentioned his presenting a paper on what he was talking about with us at the upcoming Small Bodies Assessment Group (SBAG) meeting.  You can find the organization with a Google search and possible hear his comments which might be streamed.  Other topics included Mars Sample Returns to Earth and Planetary protection for Mars to help prevent contaminating Mars to ruin the science study of the planet.  In this context, Dan had some things to say about the launch of the Tesla on the Falcon Heavy a few months ago.

After Dan's call, we took a call from Daran of Skyhook Propulsion and the ARCAMAX project.  Daran, located in Pittsburg, PA, explained their project, their target market for student small sat and cubesat like payloads (soup can size) and the idea of renting payload space.  Daran has been invited to post an update on the blog so look for it.  He also provided us with his Facebook site information, launch site information, project economics and more.

Mark from Petaluma was our next caller.  He commented on the Daran call and project, talked about rocket development and LEO expansion due to lower costs and more.  He also referenced the coming small commercial space stations.

In the second segment, Ft. Worth John called.  He inquired about the SpaceX plans to delay orbiting the Moon with two tourists.  We talked about that project, then John wanted to talk about the Pew poll and the lack of interest in human spaceflight to Mars and the Moon.  John told us why he thought the HSF interest was lacking.  You can find the poll on the net but the Space News article I used for the show is at http://spacenews.com/poll-shows-more-public-support-for-nasa-science-programs-than-human-exploration

Kim of Moonwards.com was our next caller.  Kim wanted to talk about the Pew Research poll survey questions as she thought the questions were not that good.  I mentioned that the Friday guest John Connolly also suggested the questions were not the best questions to ask on the subject.  Kim liked the Bezos stepping stone approach mentioned by Dan during his call earlier in the program.  Kim then talked about the USGS service and their LRO file and available online data which she said was impressive.  The downloads run between 8 and 22 gigs but it is all very high lunar surface resolution material.  During Kim's call, our friend Anthony from the Griffith Observatory checked in to share their experience regarding the knowledge and awareness of SpaceX and other space issues from visitors to Griffith, even when they are showing a SpaceX Falcon launch.  I read his email on air.  I also suggested to Kim, John, and Anthony that we in the community could be doing a better job of educational outreach.  What do you think?

Freemont John called to mention the space tourism hotel concept by The Gateway Foundation which has a YouTube video. He posted the links on this on the blog so check it out.  Perhaps I should ask the head guy to be a guest on the show. What do you think about that idea?

I mentioned a terrific HBO @ Home show, Vice, Episode 8 of the current season.  A listener told me about this program.  Check it out. The first half is on 3D Printing but space provided the examples used in the show. Very cool.  The second part was on all the new technology coming online for SETI to use in their ET searches.  You might be surprised to learn how SETI is changing. I certainly was surprised.

The last caller was Terry from Texas. He wanted to talk about the NASA Crew Certification requirements regarding risk at over 200::1!  Listen to what Terry had to say about this. He posted the article he read on this on the blog so follow the link if you are interested.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog for this show.  You can reach any of the guests, callers or emailers through me.
