Richard Easton

Richard Easton has an Sc.B. from Brown University and an M.L.A. from the University of Chicago.  He is a co-author of GPS Declassified: From Smart Bombs to Smartphoneswww.gpsdeclassified.com  It has been named as one of six books in the 2016 Space Professional Reading List by the National Security Space Institute in Colorado Springs. Easton has contributed articles on the history of GPS to The Space Review, Quest: The History of Spaceflight Quarterly, Spaceflight and The Institute of Navigation Newsletter.  He has also spoken widely on the topic.  He gave a plenary address in 2009 to the AIAA’s Guidance, Navigation and Control Conference, spoke at the 2010 Navy Day celebration in Washington, at the 2012 “After Longitude: Modern Navigation in Context” seminar in England and at the Explorer’s Club in New York in 2014.  He is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and works as a consulting actuary in Winnetka, IL.  He has been interested in space for a long time. In second grade, he took the December, 1957 issue of National Geographic to "Show and Tell".  It had a picture of his dad, Roger Easton, holding a Vanguard satellite (which he designed).  Vanguard 1 was the fourth satellite to reach orbit and is the oldest orbiting satellite.

Roger Easton was the designer of the Vanguard 1 satellite, which was key to the Vanguard project, and was the person who conceived, patented, and led the development of critical enabling technologies for the US GPS system. He was also the recipient of the National Medal of Technology which was awarded to him in November 2005.
