Guests: Shubber Ali, Reda Anderson, Dr. David Livingston, Thomas A. Olson
Guests: Space Cynics Shubber Ali, Tom Olson, and me (DrSpace aka Professor L) met for this interview in the hotel coffee shop for an in-person discussion featuring the Cynics' view of several of the topics discussed at ISDC 2008. This was the first ever in-person Cynics show, but we hope to offer you more and with our fourth Cynic, Old Space Cadet, who could not be with us this year. We were also joined by Reda Anderson, who is now an Honorary Space Cynic. The gloves were taken off and our discussion was hard-hitting on many topics. We talked about several sacred cows, including the VSE and lunar development plans, space solar power, spaceports, suborbital tourism, and more. Your comments and feedback are welcome, but do it through the Space Cynics blog for all to see: http://spacecynic.wordpress.com/. If you do send a note to drspace@thespaceshow.com, be advised that I will copy and paste the note to the comments section on the blog for the announcement and link to this show, so please, put your comments directly on the Cynic website. All of your views and comments are welcome, even from those of you who will strongly and rudely disagree with the content of the discussion. You are still respected and welcome, though you may not feel that way after one or two Cynics address your question or comment. We do want to hear from you. We hope you appreciate this candid and very frank discussion.

About our guests...

Shubber Ali
Shubber Ali is a senior manager in Accenture's Process & Innovation Performance group, where he helps private and public sector clients to develop non-incremental innovation capabilities and offerings in industries ranging from financial services to high tech. He previously served as the Group Manager for Risk Strategy at Capital One, and was the Manager of KPMG's Aerospace and Defense consulting practice, where he worked on projects ranging from GPS and Launch systems (ELV and RLV) to commercial satellite systems (comms and remote sensing) and commercialization of the ISS. He also successfully co-founded a space-derived private equity-backed startup, Snowsports Interactive, which won a major international design award this spring and has just signed their first commercial contracts in the US ski market for this season. He is a regularly featured presenter at industry conferences, including most recently this month at both the Frost & Sullivan Innovation conference in San Francisco (where he co-facilitated a workshop for over 50 senior executives from across industry on conducting innovation diagnostics for their companies) and at the IQPC Chicago conference (where he spoke on the role of Lean Six Sigma and Process discipline in fostering Innovation). Shubber is also the founder of the Space Cynics blog, a contrarian voice in the otherwise generally kool-aid fueled alt.space world (although he and his fellow Cynic bloggers certainly take jabs at the established space industry giants as well...). He holds an MBA from Georgetown University, where he also served as an adjunct professor of business strategy.

Reda Anderson
On April 10, 1912, The Titanic left Southampton, England on its maiden voyage, bound for New York City. At 11:40pm April 14, 1912, the Titanic hit an ice berg and disappeared from the oceans surface at 2:20am April 15, 1912, taking with it over 1,500 souls. A little less than 100 years later, Reda Anderson, dove in a Russian submersible 12,500 feet to the bottom of the ocean, to see for herself what remains of the disintegrating Titanic. She is one of less than 100 paying passengers and less than 12 women who have ever done so. Flying from Los Angeles to St. Johns, Newfoundland, Reda along with Melody, her 11-year-old granddaughter, boarded the largest ocean going research vessel in the world, the Keldysh, The Keldysh is the mother ship to MIR1 and MIR 2,two of five submersibles in the world capable of making such a dive. A mere six feet wide on the inside and holding a pilot and two passengers, Reda says, “It was a bit cramped in there.” But, even so, she says the MIR submersible was roomier than in the Rocketplane XP, a modified Lear 24 jet, will be when she flies into space as Rocketplane-Kistler's first paying customer. In the 1960s she purposefully immersed herself into an active anti-Vietnam riot in San Francisco and a tidal wave at the beach just to see what these experiences would be like. Reda has traveled to the seven continents and 47 countries preferring to rough it on her travels such as fishing for piranha in the Piranha River in Brazil and leading four-wheel-drive trips both domestically to the Mojave Desert and internationally to remote Mongolia and Peru. More recently, in South Africa she survived an incursion with a boulder following aborted takeoff in a small aircraft. Reda has undergraduate and master's degrees in business, and an additional forty-plus university classes of various subjects. She's is a real estate investor in residential rental properties in Southern California and lives in Los Angeles.
